About this webpage

This is not the official website for the cemetery; that website can be found here. This page is intended to be used for information on walking tours, interpretive panels, and more. This page is not supported by the Village of Albion and was created by Albion High School senior, Kyle Thaine in 2015-2016. The Orleans Hub wrote an article about this project here.

A brief history of Mount Albion

Before its founding in 1843, Albion, and its surrounding towns, were dotted with nondescript family plots. These were often plain to look at, serving a very utilitarian purpose.

When the town purchased the 25 origianl acres of Mount Albion, local engineer and former builder of the Erie Canal, Marvin Porter was entrusted to design the cemetry.

Porter made the terraced design that we know today. With the goal to make the cemetery a place to visit, not necessaily a place to mourn, Porter made the park-like atmosphere we enjoy today.
